Campbell, California · Machine-Shop First

Built for the problems most shops cannot solve.

Pumphrey & Co. works on antique, prewar, vintage, and classic cars where replacement parts, routine repair, and modern assumptions stop being useful.

The point of view

Not a restoration shop with a machine in the corner.

The machine work is the foundation. Castings fail. Bearings wear out. Threads disappear. Previous repairs hide bad decisions. Before a car can look finished, the problems underneath have to be understood and solved.

That is where Pumphrey & Co. starts: with the original part, the failed system, the material, and the way the car was meant to work.

Working method

How the shop thinks.

01

Understand the original part.

Before replacing or remaking anything, the shop works out what the part was supposed to do, how it failed, and what the assembly needs in order to function correctly.

02

Save what can be saved.

Original material matters. If a casting, fitting, bearing surface, or assembly can be repaired correctly, that is usually the better answer.

03

Make what cannot be bought.

When no replacement exists, the work moves to measuring, machining, welding, brazing, and fitting until the part works again.

Shop profile

Judgment before shortcuts.

Collectors bring Pumphrey & Co. the kind of work that does not have a simple answer. The car may be rare. The part may be unavailable. The previous repair may have created a new problem. The first job is to understand what is actually wrong.

The shop works from the mechanical problem outward. Measure carefully. Preserve what makes sense. Repair or remake what no longer can be bought.
