The odd jobs are usually where the expertise shows.

Some work does not fit neatly into a standard restoration category. Tire fitment, old wheel construction, obsolete rim sizes, discreet air conditioning, and the small mechanical problems that stop a car from being driven all require the same thing: patience, judgment, and the right touch.

At Pumphrey & Co., specialty work is handled with the same standard as the larger builds. If the part, wheel, tire, or system cannot be treated like a modern replacement item, we slow down and solve it correctly.

Tire & Wheel Service

Antique wheels do not go on a modern tire machine.

Wire wheels, wood-spoke wheels, obsolete rim sizes. The wheels on early cars were built differently, and servicing them takes someone who knows how they go together and what damages them.

We mount, balance, and service tires and wheels on antique and classic cars by hand when the equipment calls for it, because the wrong machine and the wrong touch can ruin a wheel that is nearly impossible to replace.

Wheel Restoration

A wheel that is out of true is not just ugly. It is unsafe.

Old wheels carry a hundred years of use, and a lot of them are bent, rusted, loose at the spokes, or out of round. On a heavy prewar car, that is not a cosmetic problem. It is a driving one.

We restore wheels back to true and sound, with the spoke tensioning, repair, and finishing the wheel needs to be safe on the road again, not just to sit and look correct.

Tire Shaving

Sometimes the right tire does not exist in the right size.

Vintage fitment is its own problem. The correct tire for a car might not be made anymore, or the only available tire runs slightly too tall or too wide for the fender, the clearance, or the look the car is supposed to have.

Tire shaving lets us bring a tire down to the exact dimension the car needs. It is a specific skill for a specific problem, and it is the kind of thing that separates a car that fits from one that is almost right.

Automotive Air Conditioning

Air conditioning a classic without butchering it.

Adding or servicing AC on a vintage car is a balancing act. The owner wants to actually drive and enjoy the car, but the work cannot hack up the dash, the engine bay, or the character of the car to get there.

We handle automotive air conditioning with that in mind, fitting and servicing systems so the car stays comfortable and stays correct, instead of looking like something was forced in where it never belonged.
